There is no single faster way to organizational failure than through misstated, misunderstood, or just a shear void of clear expectations. But every day, employees lack the direction and support needed from their managers to determine priorities, make good decisions, and consistently achieve desired business results. And, it doesn’t have to be this way.
Tell them how to be successful!
I see it every day. Managers spend a massive amount of time telling employees what to do rather than what to achieve. Management intentions aren’t bad, just often misapplied; and this is especially evident with new managers but not exclusively. The one size fits all approach plagues even the most seasoned manager due to deadlines, corporate pressure, and bad habits.
It’s a fact, employees want to feel valued and want to know their contribution matters; and, although it varies from employee to employee, most just want a target, guidelines, and a relative amount of autonomy to get the job done. Too much “help” and you risk being labeled a micro-manager; not enough help can lead to a sense of abandonment for many.
Lead more. Manage less.
For my clients you’ve heard this before; it is all about applying your leadership skills in the right proportions, at the right time.
Done correctly, expectation setting is a powerful tool in your leadership arsenal to challenge your employees, build sustainable capability, and drive business results. As we head into the summer months, setting expectations will ensure your team, and workforce, stays focused on your goals.
