At a recent speaking engagement, where I was the speaker, I noticed a quotation stenciled on the conference room wall which caught my attention and it says plenty about the failure of putting ideas into action. The quotation is from Nolan Bushnell; an American engineer and entrepreneur who founded both Atari, Inc and the Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza-Time Theaters chain.
"The critical ingredient is getting off your butt and doing something. It’s as simple as that. A lot of people have ideas but there are few who decide to do something about them now. Not tomorrow. Not next week. But today. The true entrepreneur is a doer, not a dreamer."
I see “strategic plans” as ideas, for companies, that need to be shared and, most importantly, put into action; however the challenge lies within the core of this quotation and that is “doing something today." Almost all strategic planning efforts produce a well-structured document but many are kept a secret and often end up on the bookshelf in a small number of executive offices. The concept of “today” is lost.
You absolutely must get people on-board today; this is, engaged in the execution of making the “idea” a reality. This involves a clear, consistent, and penetrating message that will provide inspiration at all levels in your organization. A well communicated strategic plan will satisfy four essential employee needs to achieve the best results:
So...are you a doer or a dreamer?
